Fall is here! This brings great opportunities for us Lions to be noticed in our communities. Lions across our county are everywhere, including fall festivals, October-fests, Halloween parades and trunk-or-treats, hayrides, bonfires, and perhaps squeezing in one last chicken barbecue.
October is the month dedicated to one of the service areas for which we Lions are most known – vision. On October 10th, we celebrate World Sight Day. This World Sight Day, let’s pledge to take an eye exam ourselves—or better yet, have your club get involved with our new SPOT Vision Screeners and join us in our Project 2020 to increase the number of vision screenings of the youth in Westmoreland County this Lions year. Contact PDG Sam Snively if you’d like to arrange training on the SPOT vision screening equipment at your club. Each October 15th is International White Cane Safety Day. The white cane is an essential tool for the blind, giving them the ability to achieve a full and independent life. It allows free and safe movement from place to place. Many of our Lions Clubs hold White Cane Day collections at local shopping centers and events to support vision related projects and services. Please make sure to report your club’s White Cane Day collections totals to our district chairperson, Mark Tintori.
Above all, October is a great month to bring new Lions into our organization. With summer over, everyone is back into a normal routine and it’s still ahead of the busy holiday season. Did you know that Lions Clubs International will credit your club back the application fee for new members who are veterans? It just takes an additional request form.
Please invite friends, neighbors, family to join you at your club’s next event. Let them see your club in action doing what we do best… service! Or, schedule a club social event and invite prospective members. Let them see your club at work or having fun together.
Continue to invite them and follow up. With more members, we can serve more people and do more projects. And…. There is so much to do!
Clubs that add new members in both October and April will receive the Membership Growth Award Banner Patch and a fiscal year patch. Thereafter, repeat award recipients receive a fiscal year patch to affix below the banner patch.
Finally, we are ready to have some fun this year and raise a few challenges to our fellow Lions members and clubs. We are announcing a few contests this month.
1. Club Service Reporting Contest. Check GST/PDG Lance’s article for details.
2. Club Membership Growth Contest. Check GMT/PDG Dave’s article for details.
3. Individual Member Be a STAR Contest. This contest is open to all Lions members.
Join members who will Be a STAR this Lions Year by completing the following 3 activities: STrive to plan and lead one new service project or fundraising activity for your club, Assist with another club’s project, and Recruit and sign up one new member.
STARs will be recognized on the District 14E website and social media, receive a certificate, and be entered into a drawing for prizes. Club secretaries should send be a STAR nomination information to DG Dave when all three activities are completed. Contest runs July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020.
Have a great October fellow Lions! Wear your Lions pin once per week in your daily activities. You’ll be surprised at the conversations it starts!
