It’s hard to believe that half of this Lions year is already behind us. It has been such a great year so far! As the 34 Lions Clubs in Westmoreland County, we have raised and donated tens of thousands of dollars, we have volunteered tens of thousands of service hours and we have welcomed many new Lions members to our clubs to join us in service! Pretty amazing!
Another piece of good news to share with everyone is that after nearly three years of discussions, we are proud to announce that Excela Health will begin referring patients needing assistance to our Lions Diabetes Center based out of McKeesport Hospital. This is fantastic news for Westmoreland County residents who were not able to take advantage of the medication financial assistance we provide to those newly diagnosed with diabetes and those who hit the donut hole. However, it does mean that we will need to find a way to increase the funding to our diabetes center to help us fund the additional requests for assistance expected. We also have planned a huge celebration for all our Lions members to take the place of our traditional spring rally this year. I hope every single Lion will mark their calendars and save the date of Saturday, April 18th. Our spring rally this year is all about Lions coming together and having some fun, so we will be having a dinner and casino night at the Barn at Ligonier. Details will be shared in the February newsletter. But I hope you’ll plan to join us for an evening that is all about having some fun and open to Lions and non-Lions, so bring your friends and family along to share in the good times.
We are also working to start two new special interest Lions Clubs this year. On Tuesday, January 21st at 7pm, we will be hosting on information session and open house at Panera Bread in Greensburg. We are looking to start a Touched by Cancer Lions Club and a Westmoreland PRIDE Lions Club. The Touched by Cancer club will focus on supporting those battling cancer, celebrating survivors, and other activities. The Westmoreland PRIDE club will focus on the LGBTQ+ community and related services. Please invite anyone you know that might be interested to join us or have them contact me or PDG Dave Stitely.
