Do some Research.  I attended the Eye Research Seminar at UPMC on October 7th. It was very interesting to learn how the Lions are supporting some ground breaking research. One example of this is using stem cells that are grown on a gel. This gel is then used to cover the eye, like a contact, to repair a damaged or scratched cornea. The researchers told us that this can repair the cornea within days. Of course, this will have to go through government testing and approvals before it can be available.

New retinal imaging techniques will prevent vision loss by enabling the doctor to diagnosis glaucoma earlier and start treatment sooner. This research is funded through the contributions to the PA Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation. Another foundation the Lions assist with is the Western Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Foundation, WPALHF.org. This foundation, with assistance from UPMC, provided hearing aids to individuals who fall within the guidelines.

During the January Club Support Session, the WPLHF will be the featured speakers. Have a Great Thanksgiving Holiday. Good luck to all the hunters out there, be it for deer or for the perfect gift.
